KARL & DAVE GO TO HELL
A new podcast on a mutual love of ours, William Blake’s Proverbs of Hell.
Part of a larger work, The Marriage of Heaven & Hell, The Proverbs emerged between 1790 & 93 as part of Blake’s intense theological and political engagement with the French Revolution, which greatly inspired him.
They are an attempt to up-end cliches by the dozen, & rewrite the symbolic language of the imagination in order to produce a literature as revolutionary as the times, as consciousness-raising as the activities of ‘the mob’ were world-altering.
But Blake, who saw the revolutionary wave of the late 18th century as the latest episode in an eternal battle between the oppressed & the oppressors, also infused The Proverbs of Hell with the experience & wisdom of rebellions through the ages, drawing especially on Biblical accounts of the struggles of the Israelites contra Egypt, Babylon, & Rome.T
The Proverbs of Hell are essential reading for anyone interested in political literature & in the crossover between radical theology & political thought.
In each episode we will be looking at 3 of the Proverbs, discussing what they meant back then, & what they might have to say to our current political predicaments.
In Episode 1 we look at these 3
THE ROAD OF EXCESS LEADS TO THE PALACE OF WISDOM
THE TYGERS OF WRATH ARE WISER THAN THE HORSES OF INSTRUCTION
THE EAGLE NEVER LOST SO MUCH TIME AS WHEN HE SUBMITTED TO LEARN OF THE CROW
